Maria-Magdalenakapel (The Magdalene Chapel) | |||||||||
This Gothic chapel adjoins the Small Beguinage. In the beginning of the
fourteenth century renovation started after a fire. During the religious
riots in 1580 the Geuzen destroyed and violated the interior. During the
French occupation the chapel was sold. Eventually the city of Mechelen became
the owner. The building successively functioned as a school, a municipal
museum of folklore, again as school and recently as a rehearsal room for
a circus workshop. The large tiled tableau on the side of the choir, a very
rare work of art, remains miraculously intact. It depicts Christ on the
cross, with Mary on the left and John the Evangelist on the right. It contains
413 tiles of 13 by 13 cm, partly white-blue, partly white-pink, and dates
from the eighteenth century. |
